Say Goodbye to Scalds with These Babycare Tips

Little ones have not yet finished developing the protective layer of the dermis, so any contact with chemical elements or synthetic textures could harm their health.

Scalds are one of the first troubles that parents go through during their little one’s first months. This occurs because, unlike an adult, children have not yet finished developing the protective layer of the dermis, so any contact with chemical elements or synthetic textures could harm their health.

Why does my baby get scalded?

In particular, what is also known as diaper rash is a condition that occurs when the baby remains in full diapers for a long time or when it is changed very infrequently. According to Nemours Kidshealth, it can occur through irritation, infection, or allergy (especially in children with skin sensitivity ). It manifests itself in the buttocks and the deep folds of the genital area.

In some cases, the condition leads to the development of Candida albicans, a type of fungus that causes a severe rash that extends from the affected area to the baby’s back and whose recovery takes more days than that of a case of usual scald (which lasts between two to three days, approximately).

Treatment for scald in a baby

Fortunately, treating a baby with scalds can be done at home. First, clean the diaper area with water and neutral soap (scented and colored products could intensify the irritation); then dry by giving small touches without rubbing so as not to cause pain or discomfort.

Once clean, place a medicinal ointment – especially those that contain zinc oxide – on all the spaces that have been affected. It is also possible to use Vaseline. Remember to do the procedure during each change. Preferably, leave the baby without a diaper for a few hours so the injured skin can breathe a little.

Suppose the condition presents fever, peeling, pimples, or wounds with pus or blisters. In that case, it is necessary to go quickly to the treating doctor.

How to prevent scalds?

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that parents use excellent hygiene and caution when changing their child, such as preventing the child from being left in a diaper for several hours during the day. For each change, the following procedure must be followed: clean, dry, and apply ointment in large quantities, especially in deep folds.

Preferably use absorbent diapers, as it helps dry skin last. When you wear a new diaper, please don’t wear it so tight to prevent the skin and fabric from rubbing too much.
