Cyber threats can ruin your data, money, and online accounts. If you use the internet for work, shopping, or business, you need to know how these attacks work.
Online safety is important for every user and business. Hackers may steal passwords, send fake emails, attack websites, or lock files to demand money. However, you can lower these risks by following a couple of simple steps.
AI, online fraud, and global tension shape your risk every day. The numbers show why this issue matters. The FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) received more than 1 million complaints in 2025.
In my 12 years of writing about security, one pattern stays the same. Attackers go where the money and the weak points are. Today, those points are AI tools, unpatched software, and your own trust.
What Are the Main Cyber Threats in 2026?
Online attacks can take many different forms. Some target people, while others target websites, firms, and public services.
Here are major cyber threat risks you should know about.
1. AI Scams and Deepfakes
Now, AI makes fake voices, fake videos, and fake emails that look real.
The FBI report included a section on AI for the first time. It logged 22,364 complaints with nearly $893 million in losses. Also, 94% of leaders surveyed by the World Economic Forum expect AI to be the biggest force shaping security this year.
Here is my advice. If someone asks for money by phone or video, hang up. Then call back on a number you already know. Families can also pick a secret code word.
2. Crypto Scams and Theft
Crypto fraud is now the most expensive type of online scam. IC3 received 181,565 crypto complaints in 2025. Those victims lost more than $11 billion.
Chainalysis also reports that about $3.4 billion in crypto was stolen worldwide in 2025. Most of this came from a few massive hacks.
Many victims never see the scam coming. A stranger builds trust, then shows fake profits on a fake app. Never send crypto to someone you only know online.
3. Attacks on Your Security Tools
Security tools exist to protect you. Yet criminals now go after them. They aim at VPNs, firewalls, and other tools that sit on the edge of a network.
Why does this approach work? These tools are trusted, and they often run with high access. When they are not patched, they become an easy entry point.
So, do not assume a tool is safe just because it is a security product. Check for updates often. Remove tools you no longer use.
4. Ransomware and Remote Work
Remote work is normal now, and criminals know it. Your home network and your personal devices are part of the target.
Verizon found that ransomware affected 44% of breaches. The median payment was $115,000. That is a heavy loss for a small business.
Furthermore, Verizon reports that people are involved in about 60% of breaches. So, one careless click can lead to a breach. Use multifactor login on every account that offers it.
5. Nation State Attacks
The World Economic Forum’s Global Cybersecurity Outlook 2026 says geopolitics is the top factor shaping cyber risk plans. It also reports that 64% of organizations now plan for politically motivated attacks.
You may not be a government target. However, your bank, your hospital, or your internet provider could be a target. When they are hit, you feel it too.
6. Unpatched Flaws and Third Party Risk
Verizon’s 2025 Data Breach Investigations Report found that breaches linked to a third party doubled to 30%. Attackers also used software flaws to get in 34% more often than the year before. Meanwhile, only 54% of flaws in edge devices were fully fixed.
In my experience, people delay updates because they are busy. That delay is exactly what criminals count on. Turn on automatic updates for your phone, laptop, and router.
My final verdict on cyber threats in 2026 is that they can affect anyone who uses the internet. They can lead to stolen data, lost money, and website downtime. Yet, many common risks can be minimised with good security practices like keeping software up to date, using strong passwords and using two-factor login verification.
