But here’s the rub: traditional verification methods like waiting for loan performance outcomes don’t work for real-time algorithmic assessment. Institutions need immediate validation of tools before multi-year performance data becomes available, creating a methodological gap that existing frameworks struggle to fill.

CSIRO’s development of frameworks for assessing artificial intelligence (AI) systems without ground truth validation represents industry recognition that algorithmic accuracy in high-stakes financial domains remains an unsolved methodological problem. When you can’t wait three years to find out if your risk model actually works, you need creative solutions.

The MARIA framework developed by CSIRO’s Data61 addresses this challenge by evaluating AI systems’ relative performance compared to existing processes using metrics like predictability, capability, and interaction dominance. The framework evaluates whether an AI system performs better or worse than existing human processes rather than measuring absolute accuracy against perfect outcomes. This approach acknowledges that waiting years for loan performance data to validate models is impractical. Institutions need methods to assess AI tools before deployment.

By shifting focus from absolute performance to the relative difference between AI systems and existing processes, MARIA provides actionable guidance on where AI improves outcomes or introduces new risks. Researchers Jieshan Chen, Suyu Ma, Qinghua Lu, Sung Une Lee, and Liming Zhu, all researchers at CSIRO’s Data61 and co-authors of the MARIA framework study, contributed to this development.

This framework directly addresses the problem of validating algorithmic risk tools without waiting years for loan performance confirmation. It provides actionable assessment but evaluates relative improvement rather than confirming absolute accuracy. MARIA exemplifies industry and research institutions attempting to fill governance gaps through self-regulation. Institutions are also implementing internal governance structures such as credit committee review thresholds for algorithmic outputs and periodic model audits.

Without clear algorithmic governance requirements, institutions maintaining human oversight alongside digital tools demonstrate prudent risk management.

Digital tools excel at pattern recognition across vast datasets and real-time monitoring. But they lack the contextual understanding preserved by traditional methods. Hybrid approaches attempt to capture both efficiencies while maintaining human review where contextual judgment adds value.
